WIDE Recomienda: #0023

Electronica for motion picture soundtrack, a critique on social network and digital media alienation, comfy tracks to take bubble baths, feminism-infused pop and a couple of great R&B tunes with even greater backgrounds to lighten moods and dance like a fool. Take a look at WIDE’s weekly pick:

1. Kelela and Friends – LMK (What’s Really Good Remix)

Just about a year from the release of Kelela’s first album, she’s joined by four of the other most prominent and discourse-challenging artists, revamping her signature piece to a whole new level of empowered hottie flaunt.

2. Imaabs – Bilis Negra

The renown conceptual artist and member of the N.A.A.F.I. collective keeps developing his already distinct and atypical style with this self-released track, which he relates to Hippocrates’ humorism and the Freudian concepts of melancholia and longing for the unknown. Pulsing  with a rather martial beat this very atmospheric track evokes a rather inhospitous soundscape fit for an alien invasion screenplay or the clash of stone age cannibal tribes: good job reaching in the subconscious imagery!

3. Objekt – Secret Snake

And speaking of soundscapes, here’s another cannonball for ya by Berlin based IDM musician and DJ extraordinaire Objekt: a completely ‘concept’ or ‘theme track’ with a very techno-ey vibe that is very reminiscent of the work of Mike Moraski’s on that very popular videogame of 2011. Besides some rather awkward, intermittent burping samples, the track completely conveys some hi-tech science station feel.

4. WWWater – SCREEN

I’m gonna quote Nietzche on this one. Is that okay? Okay. Our dear Friederich used to say something like “ain’t no ‘for real’ truth, just the most popular lie”, and WWWater’s latest video kinda goes in the same vein of that pointy remark, poking fun at the fact that, instead of setting us free, the combination of technology and sexual liberation have made us dependant, thrill-seeking in a very conforming way and straight-up vain. This statement is pretty good on its own, but then there’s the musical accompaniment – it’s surprising how many feelings the artist has shoved in about four minutes – there’s tension and energy, a dance-punky chorus and a very dramatic, reflecting crescendo on the last verse. Quite a piece of work!

5. VXO – Why U Call Me

VXO is a vocalist from Connecticut pushing a crystal-clear body positive and femme aesthetic and artistic persona, and it looks like she’ll be dropping her first EP on October, with New York producer Color Plus on, well, production. “Why U Call Me” is a means to keep all those followers hyped up, and it’s working, as it beeped its way into our radars: a rather refreshing track with drum-‘n’-bassy samples, sweet vocals from an achin’ heart and raw, iconoclastic feminist femininity, like a citrus, rosewater and malt liquor cocktail (if you can imagine that).

6. Ari Lennox – Whipped Cream

It’s been a month since Ari Lennox revealed her state of emotional distress to the public, considering the possibility of leaving music indefinitely. Luckily, that didn’t turn out to be as definitive as it looked, owing much to the support of her fans. It’s also been a couple of weeks since the release of the official video for Whipped Cream. To think that a track with such a light mood and sweet beats could be produced in the midst or the periphery of a crisis! So we send our love and positive energy to a talented artist in tough times <3
