She Is El Capo Guest Mix 0019 – Nov 19

Last Tuesday, 12 of November, Mix Nights had its 016 showcase at The Love Inn in Bristol, and one of the DJs playing that night was the director of WIDE under the name: She Is El Capo.

Mix Nights is a course for women and female-identifying people where local DJ mentors such as Em Williams, Daisy Moon and Danielle Doobay teach the basics of mixing on either vinyl or CDJs.

Nikols Latuff, in her debut as She Is El Capo tells us:

β€œI’ve been in love with music since I was a teenager, that’s how I ended up doing radio in Venezuela and producing local parties in my hometown, because of this I had the opportunity to select music in clubby situations but I never really focused on how to technically do it. Therefore I didn’t actually mix the tracks. This often made me feel inferior to other male DJs, I was often in situations where they came to the stage to change my EQs or show me β€œhow to do this or that” though it never felt like they did it to genuinely help or teach me. And this is why Mix Nights felt like I had the chance to be in a safe space to learn and make mistakes.

Despite not being completely new to the club environment, it has been a long time since I last played music in public. Also, moving from Venezuela to Chile, and from Chile to the UK in less than 4 years, among other things, I went through too many changes that definitely impacted my confidence and mental health.

Mix Nights: workshops by women for women

Through social media I saw a Mix Nights post inviting people who identify themselves as women to learn how to mix in CDJs or vinyl, so I pushed myself to apply, as an act of faith to gain back all these things I felt I’ve lost. Also, I felt much more motivated knowing that my tutors would be female DJs, since I had bad experiences in the past with mansplaining.

I definitely learned a lot from my tutors, especially from Em, I feel more motivated to share the music I listen to in a club environment, MIXING and not just selecting, and also because I lead WIDE, I am in touch with music from many artists in Latin America which I’d love to share with others in Bristol!

My 30-minute set tried to reflect some of my current music taste, leaning towards bass music, and flashing Latinx rhythms that are impossible to erase from my memory as well as some dark vibes, we could call it: dark reggaeton.”
