Ghetto Witchez Guest Mix 0004 – Aug 29

Love does not have to be just a romantic journey we can also fall in love with the desire to change everything and this is how the story of Ghetto Witchez begins, where Terror Puppy from Guatemala and Sokko from El Salvador meet cybernetically to inject novelty to the underground music scenes of these countries.

Ghetto WItchez is self-defined as a platform for audiovisual production and dissemination that seeks to generate dialogue between sound, visual and rituals. While exhibiting new talents from the local scene and the rest of the world.

“Ours is Alta Magia sounds.” GW.

We talked with Ghetto Witches to get to know this Latinx project of a global nature.

How did GW start?

Terror Puppy: We did an impromptu party for Pride 2018 in Guatemala City that was supposed to be at the Central Plaza but it ended up raining too hard that day and we ended up playing in a cultural house for maricas (queers). It was very nice.

Sokko: After migrating to the US, I was in a depression for wanting to do many things linked to music as I did in Guatemala and El Salvador, I was alone in Washington DC where I didn’t know anyone. One day exploring instagram I saw the profile of Ghetto Witchez and I thought it was a good name for a label and music magazine, but it was abandoned, so I decided to communicate with Josseline (SucioSucio) who was the author of the profile and it started there.

What is the goal with GW?

Terror Puppy: I was tired of the local music scene. Then I decided together with a friend – who is no longer in the project – to organize small parties where the music we share with our audience was different from everything heard in Guatemala City. Fortunately our squad loved the idea. I think for the moment we define ourselves as a party crew and promoters of the music that we find on the Internet.

Sokko: We consider ourselves as managers of diverse spaces for the exhibition of new artists, I don’t think we just stay in sound, we also share our spaces with artists from other disciplines such as illustration, performance art … a bit of everything, we are not closed to any ideas.

What artists are currently involved?

At the moment we are working with Reburra, Dj Glen Martin and Jese Sevilla in El Salvador. In Guatemala we have our designer Jonathan Yoc.

As for musical genres and their line of consuming music, what is the main source that sets the project on fire?

SoundCloud and BandCamp. We like fresh new music. As for musical genres, we are not closed, we have different tastes. Regarding what we share in Ghetto Witchez, we are currently concentrating on the urban music platform as global, reggaeton, neo perreo, pc, dembow and there are some that we would not know how to catalog but the same if it sounds good we share it.

What’s next for GW?

We will have our first party in Washington DC in September and also a surprise with a compilation of tracks from different Latinx producers. In addition, we will always continue to host parties in Guatemala and El Salvador. Costa Rica, get ready.
