Grove Guest Mix 0018 – Nov 15

Introducing our guest mix #0018: Grove, hailing from – our new home city of – Bristol.

Grove is an artist, producer, DJ and singer/MC based in Bristol, they is also half of BAAST, a fierce DJ duo exploring and questioning gender identities whilst turning on the heat with jungle, bass and dance beats.

We invited them to share with WIDE a mix that represents and empowers them, and this is what Grove said to us:

“Queer, black and gritty is the theme for this mix and are the three things I identify with most. In a world where our identities are so politicised, where we have to constantly defend and validate ourselves to ignorant folk, it’s nice to give my bloodclart mouth a break and let the music of my people and the talent on show do all the talking.

There’s also a level of intersectionality involved. Being black & queer is a minefield, with it often being the case where there’s a huge level of disconnect and discrimination from the black community towards the queer community and vice versa.

Weaving Dancehall, GQOM, Queer and Jersey Club is a way of showing how us as minorities should co-exist and have so much more in common than what divides us, and we can and should have incredible parties together (and then rally against this bullshit government that wants to keep us suppressed and fighting each other).

All tunes are either by a black artist, queer artist or are just straight up gully grit and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed putting it together.”
