Papaya Fest 2019: Latin American talent in Bristol

Bristol-based arts collective Popelei announce the first edition of their new festival. Papaya Fest will bring an exciting mix of Anglo-Latinx artists to Bristol and offer local audiences an array of new theatre and music across one ferocious fiesta of a weekend.

The small but mighty festival will take place at The Wardrobe Theatre and The Old Market Assembly in Bristol from 10th – 13th October. Papaya Fest platforms a proudly LGBTQ+ friendly message and champions female voices within its unique fusion of British and Latin American cultures.

Tamsin Hurtado Clarke, Artistic Director of Popelei, says:

“We want Papaya to be a celebration of unity – an example of all the wonderful things that happen when two cultures, inspired by one another, come together.”

The Wardrobe Theatre will host multiple Bristol debuts including Popelei’s new show ‘100 Years’. Also, Edinburgh Fringe runaway hit ‘Butch Princesa’ and a transatlantic theatrical experiment connecting performing artists from Bristol and Latin America in ‘Juicy Bits’.

Headlining the music on Friday night will be Wara – offering a fiery mix of Cuban jazz-funk with an urban London remix. Mexican born DJ Panther Panther! and Venezuelan born DJ Ivicore go head to head in a celebratory migrant tropical bass-off. The Fontanas will lead the Saturday night with their live set followed by local Bristol based DJs Booty Bass and Hiphoppapotamus plus special guests.
