About Bort:

I was born and initially raised in South Florida but my roots are fully Colombian and I grew up in the Dominican Republic from the ages 6-14 before I moved back. Growing up I didn’t really listen to dance music outside of the (now) classics like Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” and Modjo’s “Lady” and was more into the worlds of hip-hop, reggaeton, heavy metal, and later on, indie music.

The constant desire for exploration eventually led me to start raving and DJ’ing in my early 20’s. For me raving is a release, a place for me to get lost in the DJ’s soundscapes and let my body move to the music however it wants. Raving has been a monumental catalyst to so much of my growth in terms of sexuality, gender identity, fashion sense and overall presence and the desire to provide that experience for the Miami community is what led to me start organising warehouse events with my long time friend and fellow DJ, Sister System.

Why did you start DJ-ing?

Back in high school and my early college days (2012-2014) all my friends at the time were all DJ’s and I would frequently throw house parties with them. DJ’ing always looked like fun so I started to learn the basics there but it wasn’t until I started to learn more about more underground dance music through iii points that I began to take it more seriously. I had wanted to become a soccer player but a knee injury took me away from that path and the need for a fun outlet of my energy led me more strongly towards DJ’ing. Eventually, the lack of the sound that I wanted to experience led me into DJ’ing the techno that I do now.

Bort, any releases or projects in the making?

I’m working on a mix for Space Tapes that I’m excited about. It’s gonna be my second released mix (this one being my first) and somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half long. So I’ve been taking my time to figure out how I’m gonna tell my story and find the appropriate songs to convey the right feelings.

What is your best piece of advice?

Don’t get so caught up in achieving perfection with your craft that you forget to have fun, especially with DJ’ing. There’s gonna be several mistakes made each set, especially when you’re first starting out. A lot of the times the crowd doesn’t even notice them but identify them, learn from them and don’t beat yourself up about it. Always strive to deliver an authentic performance and don’t be afraid to take risks during your sets. There’s a synergy that occurs between you and the crowd and the improvisational freedom afforded from a DJ set can allow for some really spontaneous.

Tell us one thing you don’t understand about yourself.

Why I don’t let myself sleep or rest more!

What is your current favourite DJ or track?

Dr. Rubinstein, I really love her acid selections and energy and the fact that it’s vinyl makes it all the more sweet. My favorite song right now is Parola by Donato Dozzy, a fun hypnotic tune that I’ve found myself getting lost to time and time again.
