WIDE Recomienda: #0027

Great displays of Ā vocal talent and lyrical contrivance. Nice songs that are instantly forgettable. Tracks for a stripclub horror film with aliens, werewolves and people bragging about their alleged sexual deviancy in the most awkward way while wearing flip-flops over white socks. Thereā€™s something for everyone in this weekā€™s edition of WIDE Recommends!

1. Jamila Woods- Giovanni

After about 8 months out of activityĀ Jamila Woods returns kinda out of the blue with Giovanni, a single inspired on the poem ā€œEgo Trippingā€ by black revolution poet Nikki Giovanni, featuring impressive vocals and self-love lyrics very fitting for its subject matter. Stepping the line between motivational speech and song, the video sidetracks on the wisdom and experiences of various black women including the singerā€™s mom and grams, making for a rather heavy-handed feminist quip with a ā€œsee if careā€ attitude.Ā Mad respect.

2. Tasha – New Place

And speaking of empowerment, hereā€™s one for you from Chicagoā€™s talented singer, poet politcal activist and songwriterĀ Tasha. New Place thoroughly embodies the theme of gentleness (towards self and others) that the artistā€™s debut album Alone At Last was built around. Itā€™s said to imagine a different world where black folks can be free, like a sweet childlike fantasy, and if this rubs you as too extreme a solution for the oppression of ethnical ā€œminoritiesā€, well, you probably donā€™t live in Chicago.

3. RRUCCULLA ā€“ Ice Blue Coral

This is a nice track. Thatā€™s about it. We like the sound design in this track. Every instrument occupies a very neat segment of the wavelength spectrum with crystal clear timbres. The sound of running water getcha in a relaxing mood, like that ā€˜how to chillwaveā€™ video, and then weā€™re greeted by gummy synth violins bent and warped like graceful loop-de-looping alien goldfish. A very low sine bassline hums along happily as very dry drum sounds leap in and out of a reverby room, and then another stuttery LFO voice joins in to dance with the fish. We like this track very much.

4. Denitia ā€“ Be There (Visual EP)

Denitia OdigieĀ is a well-established indie artist from N.Y. whoā€™s been developing her pop music muscle slow and steady from 2008. Her latest EP, Be There is a masterful showcase of the her versatily, going inbetween the boundaries of house, dancehall and soul music seamlessly, practically amalgamated by the artistā€™s most excellent singing.

5. Konga Konga ā€“ Behind Your Mask

This track isnā€™t nice. If you feel like dancing at a severily intoxicated party on a cube-shaped plateau of black stone with a view of the storm that will end the world, this track is just for you. French producerĀ Konga Konga returns with new material after a year off the Soundcloud with a song loosely catalogued as gqom and dancehall, which is probably the dose of ketamine youā€™ve been aching for at 2 a.m. when youā€™re starting to snooze from the booze and dancing your feet away too much. With a potent and unmerciful drum beat and the reverb-dipped echoes of a legion of the dead this track is sure to getcha going again until sunrise. Hooray!!

6. Chromosav ā€“ maldades

Sticking to the eerie vibe, we bring you the latest ofĀ ŹŒÉsoÉÆoɹɄɔ,Ā a DJ and producer from Monterrey with an affinity for the transgressive and entranced rhythms. Who needs nice things and warmth when youā€™ve got sex, violence, angry techno synths and Hector el Father samples? Well, he doesnā€™t.
